During the late 19th century, Chicago's booming brewing industry produced wealthy brewery owners, many of German descent, who built grand residential mansions in the Wicker Park neighborhood of Chicago and Pierce Ave became known as Beer Barons Row.
One of these is the elaborate residence built for Herman Weinhardt, who wasn't a beer baron, but a prosperous businessman who served as president of the Weinhardt City Pump Company.
Constructed during the neighborhood's post-Chicago Fire building boom, the home reflects the wealth of the prominent German-American industrialists who settled along the tree-lined streets of Wicker Park in the late 19th century.
The Herman Weinhardt House is often informally nicknamed the "cuckoo clock house".
It earned the nickname because of its steep chalet-like roof line and ornate wooden gingerbread trim, that are reminiscent of traditional Black Forest cuckoo clocks
The Cuckoo Clock house has one of the more sprawling, beautifully landscaped side lots along Pierce Avenue, The life-size stone aheep ornamwnts add a pastoral charm to the city plot
