Good day homeedders I Hope you have all been well! It has been some time since I posted here not that I haven't been teaching and little miss learning it's just I haven't really had the time to share things and little miss doesn't always want pictures taken so it is about respecting her personal space.
We've moved along alot since we last spoke and can spell names and smaller words which is a great sign of advancement. Everyday little miss asks more questions about how to spell things and dedicates herself to her learning.
One of the areas she is doing really well in is math with addition and subtraction although multiplication is being introduced were still getting our heads around it. But she is a lot more advanced than I was at her age.
Given the weather has been a little better minus the constant rain which is causing flash flooding in some communities across Victoria we decided to sit outside in our alfresco to practice building sentences with 3 letter words.
I found this activity really great as it teaches kids to use words in sentences and they gain a stronger understanding of how words are used.
We didn't go anything too complex or over the top and just jotted down 4 words that we pulled at random that came to our minds which were put, pet, get and jet. They all sounded quite similar so also made it a little challenging to get through but fun none the less.
Our first exercise was practising saying the word out loud and then writing it next to the pre written word. This is to help learn the word itself and how to write it. You will also notice that as the kids write the word they will sound out the letters. First one at a time than in syllables and then the word itself as a whole.
Once we were finished with that it was time to work on our sentences it didn't have to be complex or over the top anything will do so long as it is a sentence.
My favourite one was when we got to pet because it showed that she really understood the different applications of words in the English language which isn't always the easiest thing as we do not have male female words but rather one word that could mean multiple things.
Little miss jumped at pet with the sentence My Pet's name is Bella as our golden retriever is named Bella and if you're wondering what the first sentence is. It's I put clothes on, I'm not entirely sure why she went for that but she wanted to try out a bigger word being clothes.
Jet was pretty much a straight forward response with Jets are fast can't knock that one can we?
The exercise was a wonderful way to help teach kids how to spell words and use them in sentences by building their own which also benefits the way they communicate with others.
A wonderful exercise and one I would highly recommend.
