This week was my mum's 57th birthday and it was a special one because for the past three years we have been seperated due to COVID so it has felt like forever since we last visited my mums house and took the kids.
My mum lives in a small unit not too far away from us and it has been extremely hard for her isolated from everyone and alone and little miss has missed going there as my mum has a small Jack Russel dog that little miss likes to play fetch with.
My mums garden is also a special place for little miss to enjoy which is filled with fair lights and all kinds of different plants and this occasion was the first time little bloke has come where he has been a little older and can understand a lot more.
My mum put together a roast beef with veggies and I have to admit, my mum isn't the best cook but I sure as heck miss her cooking. I learned to cook from my nonna and with it all the traditional Italian recipes which I still cook today.
My mum wasn't all that interested in cooking growing up and my nonna always used to say she'd regret it one day. Now my mum comes over to my house to eat all the old food we grew up on. I think it's really special and I enjoy it. I offered to take some food but my mum wanted to cook for us and I really enjoyed it.
My mum has been through quite the hard life growing up having experienced domestic violence and just a hard bout on this rock. We lost contact over the years and for a very long time I didn't speak with her but since having the kids we mended our relationship and she has come to be apart of the extended family.
My mum and I aren't too far apart in age as she was quite young when she had me and I guess in some parts thats why our relationship was fractured but I'm glad things are better now and my kids get to experience my mother in their life.
Little miss was pretty excited as she loves birthdays but kids can and do say the worst things at times screaming out "Gee Nonna, you're really old! Are you going to die soon? I guess kids really do put a perception of reality on our lives. But little miss then again calls me old all the time.
We were going through photos of when she was first born and we'd go on holidays I looked a lot younger and I'm not sure if she was making it up or being serious as she kept saying Thats not you dad, that is some other guy. You're old 🤣🤣🤣
It was great to spend some time with family, now if I could only get my mum to baby sit for us I'd be a lot happier more often!
Maybe one day, who knows?
