Don’t you think it’s weird how particular smells can bring back the oldest memories? Some smells bring back warm comforting memories, while others remind us of things we desperately want to forget.
A lot of the time I’m just sitting at my desk or walking around and I’ll smell something. I won’t be able to tell you what I’m smelling, but I would be able to pinpoint the exact memory that comes to mind. I think humans are pretty extraordinary. We can do more than we know and yet we take it for granted, every single day.
Some of us use the time we’re given to hurt others. While a lot of us want to better the world and couldn’t hurt a fly, let alone another human. Why do we have the right to take someone’s life away?
Anyway I’m going off topic, as per usual.
I just keep having these little flashbacks and it all comes down to what I’m smelling. The smells remind me of very random things and memories I forgot I even had. Memories like driving back from school on a hot summers day and stopping at the grocery store for a slushie, or walking along the beach and watching the soldier crabs.
They’re the most random memories but I love reliving them. These memories are from the best time of my life and I’m glad I didn’t let them go. I forgot about them for a while but I never truly ‘forgot’, they were always there, in the back of my mind, waiting for me to smell the right smell.
Although, I do get some bad memories. The most common is when I was around 6/7 years old and my nan had passed away. She lived in England and we lived in Australia so I didn’t get to see her before she went. We were in the car on the way home from a BBQ when my dad got the call. I didn’t completely understand what was happening when my parents started crying. I can’t remember exactly when they told us she had passed but I remember how it felt. So this memory usually arises when I smell a certain type of meat cooking on a BBQ. I’m not sure what meat it is, probably beef or lamb. I guess it’s good to have bad memories in some way? These memories impacted our lives so that’s why we hold onto them. I’m hoping I’m not the only one who relates smell to particular memories.
That’s enough of my craziness for now.
Until next time,
Meliss
