Thus Kairouan became prosperous and famous. Its status has earned it to be a holy city of Islam, the fourth after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem.
Today Kairouan has become agricultural, despite its semi-arid climate, thanks to the dams erected around it. It is an irrigation crop that mainly favors the cultivation of fruit trees and vegetables.
Kairouan also has an important university center in Raqqada.
