barbier-kairouan.jpgKairouan was founded by Okba Ibn Nafaâ in 670, despite the hostility of the Berber populations, who revolted under the leadership of the prophetess Al Kahena. But they were forced to give in and Kairouan became capital. He erected the great mosque of Kairouan, which remains one of the most prestigious monuments of Islam.
The Aghlabids pushed their conquest through Ifriqiya and occupied the whole Maghreb.
Thus Kairouan became prosperous and famous. Its status has earned it to be a holy city of Islam, the fourth after Mecca, Medina and Jerusalem.

Today Kairouan has become agricultural, despite its semi-arid climate, thanks to the dams erected around it. It is an irrigation crop that mainly favors the cultivation of fruit trees and vegetables.

Kairouan also has an important university center in Raqqada.
Let us not leave Kairouan, not to mention its pastry Makroudh, composed of semolina and stuffed dates.
