I have shared several times in my blog some adventure lived during the visits that my husband, my daughter and I make to my mother's house. Walks through the trails of the nearby pine forests have occupied some of my posts.
This one took place recently. It was the second time we went out on that trail in search of the "Charco de la Viuda", a small natural pool with a waterfall, made by the waters of the "Sumidero" river. Nobody could tell us for sure the origin of this name. Many stories are woven around it, but none with enough credibility to be considered true, so its name remains an enigma.
To get to the river we had to walk about 4 km uphill and then descend about 200 m approximately. The main road was very easy to walk, it is made for the passage of trucks and other large vehicles. The steepness of the last stretch makes it very difficult for vehicles, only oxen and horses pass through there.
The views are spectacular from there, we could appreciate the intramontane valley where the town that gives its name to the river we were looking for is located. And if you look closely you can even see, very far away and with the help of a telephoto lens, my mother's house.
The first time we went out in search of the river we passed the road that goes down to it. We climbed hills for more than 10 km. In these mountains the trails have no signs. There are no marked routes here, in fact nobody hikes here. Only a few people come up here to cut wood, sow on a plot of land or bring and carry animals that breed in the abundance of these places. We were almost hiking blind.
With the experience of the first time it was very easy to get there this time, there were no mistakes. Finally the river! It is not very impressive in size, more like a small stream 馃き. This is a tributary of the Cuyaguateje River, the largest river in Pinar del Rio province, even in the west of the country.
According to what several people informed us, we had to walk 300m more following the riverbed to reach the "Charco de la viuda" (widow's pool). We did so and arrived at a place where the noise of the water was evidently from the waterfall. We tried to reach it, but the undergrowth prevented us from passing. Frustrated, we returned to the part of the stream from where we had started. It was impossible to admire and take a bath in the natural pool.
The depth of the water where we were was very shallow, but that did not prevent us from enjoying a bath (legs only 馃き) and even splashing around a bit. The heat was unbearable and the water was very cold, just what we needed to cool down and get ready for the grueling climb. I couldn't leave without picking up some rocks to decorate and share in the 
R铆o Sumidero
He compartido varias veces en mi blog alguna que otra aventura vivida durante las visitas que hacemos mi esposo, mi hija y yo a casa de mi madre. Las caminatas por los senderos de los pinares cercanos han ocupado algunas de mis publicaciones.
Esta tuvo lugar recientemente. Era la segunda vez que sal铆amos por ese sendero en busca del "Charco de la Viuda", una poceta con una cascada que hacen las aguas del r铆o "Sumidero". Nadie supo decirme a ciencia cierta el origen de ese nombre. Muchas historias se tejen a su alrededor, pero ninguna con suficiente credibilidad como para considerarla cierta, por lo que su nombre sigue siendo un enigma.
Para llegar hasta el r铆o hay que caminar unos 4 km cuesta arriba y despu茅s descender unos 200 m aproximadamente. El camino principal es muy f谩cil de recorrer, est谩 hecho para el paso de camiones y otros veh铆culos grandes. Lo empinado del 煤ltimo tramo lo hace muy dif铆cil para veh铆culos, solo bueyes y caballos transitan por all铆.
Las vistas son espectaculares desde all铆, se aprecia el valle intramontano donde se asienta el pueblo que da nombre al r铆o que est谩bamos buscando. Y mirando bien hasta se puede ver, muuuy lejos y con la ayuda de un teleobjetivo, la casa de mi mam谩.
La primera vez que salimos en b煤squeda del rio pasamos de largo el camino que baja hasta 茅l. Subimos lomas hasta recorrer m谩s de 10 km. En estos montes los senderos no tienen se帽ales. Aqu铆 no existen rutas marcadas, de hecho nadie hace senderismo por aqu铆. Solo suben algunas personas que vienen a cortar madera, sembrar en alguna parcela o traer y llevar animales que cr铆an en la abundancia de estos parajes. Casi est谩bamos excursion谩ndo a ciegas.
Con la experiencia de la primera vez fue muy f谩cil llegar en esta ocasi贸n, no hubo errores. 隆Al fin el r铆o! No es muy impresionante su tama帽o, m谩s bien es un arroyuelo 馃き. Este es un afluente del r铆o Cuyaguateje, el r铆o m谩s grande de la provincia Pinar del R铆o, incluso del occidente del pa铆s.
Seg煤n nos informaron varias personas ten铆amos que caminar 300m m谩s siguiendo el cauce del r铆o para llegar al "Charco de la viuda". As铆 lo hicimos y llegamos hasta un lugar donde el ruido del agua era evidentemente de la cascada. Tratamos de llegar hasta ella, pero la maleza impidi贸 el paso. Frustrados retornamos hasta la parte del arroyo de donde hab铆amos salido. Fui imposible admirar y tomar un ba帽o en la poceta natural.
La profundidad del agua donde nos encontr谩bamos era muy poca, pero eso no impidi贸 que disfrut谩ramos de un ba帽o (solo nuestras piernas 馃き) y que chapoletearamos un poco. El calor era insoportable y el agua estaba muy fr铆a, justo lo que necesit谩bamos para refrescar y alistarnos para la agotadora subida. No pod铆a irme sin recoger algunas rocas para decorar y compatir en la comunidad
La empinada colina estuvo desafiante. Llegamos exhaustos a la cima y tambi茅n un poco acongojados. Otra vez el objetivo principal no hab铆a sido alcanzado, quiz谩s lo intentemos una vez m谩s, ya les contar茅.
