Saturno Cave is a pit formed by the collapse of bedrock, exposing groundwater, it is a natural freshwater pool. It is located on the road leading to the Juan Gualberto G贸mez International Airport, in the province of Matanzas, Cuba, making it very easy to get there.
As much as I searched for information I could not find out how this site was discovered. I could only know that it was found in the decade of the 30's of the last century, I imagine that like almost all the beautiful places...by pure chance.
A cafeteria and a place where we can read some information and pay the entrance fee, are at the beginning of the tour.
Going down a staircase with handrails, which facilitates access, we can reach the place. The route is short...although you have to go down a few steps. The nature that surrounds the path is abundant and the silence is only broken by the chirping of birds.
From the moment we see the cavern, we are amazed. It is a cavity of approximately 18 meters wide and 80 meters long. Abundant stalagmites and stalactites can be seen throughout the space. Many stalagmites are partially or totally submerged, suggesting that this cave was not always submerged. We are fortunate that today it is and can enjoy a swim in its refreshing waters.
The water temperature here, according to the local guides, is quite cold, a little colder than what we are used to in our beaches and rivers, despite that there were several people bathing.
In some places the water depth reaches 22 meters, but they are so transparent that you can see the bottom without difficulty. Its conditions make it perfect for snorkeling.
This was our visit to this wonder of Cuban nature. We did not leave without taking a dip! Only my daughter and I, my husband was afraid of the cold water 馃ぃ. Knowing that you are bathing in a place that could have taken hundreds of thousands of years to form, has a special meaning and deserves admiration and respect.

La Cueva del Saturno es una fosa formada por el derrumbe del lecho rocoso, dejando al descubierto las aguas subterr谩neas, es una piscina natural de agua dulce. Se encuentra en la carretera que conduce al Aeropuerto Internacional Juan Gualberto G贸mez, en la provincia de Matanzas, Cuba, por lo que es muy f谩cil llegar a ella.
Por m谩s que busqu茅 informaci贸n no pude averiguar como se descubri贸 este sitio. Solo pude saber que se encontr贸 en la d茅cada de los 30 del siglo pasado, imagino que como casi todos los lugares bonitos...por pura casualidad.
Una cafeter铆a y un lugar donde podemos leer cierta informaci贸n y pagar la entrada, se encuentran en el inicio del recorrido.
Bajando una escalera con barandas, facilita es acceso, podemos llegar al lugar. El recorrido es corto...aunque hay que bajar unos cuantos escalones. La naturaleza que rodea el camino es abundante y el silencio solo lo rompe el trinar de las aves.
Desde que se divisa la caverna el asombro nos invade. Es una cavidad de aproximadamente 18 metros de ancho y 80 de largo. Abundantes estalagmitas y estalactitas pueden apreciarse en todo el espacio. Muchas estalagmitas est谩n sumergidas de forma parcial o total, lo que sugiere que no siempre est谩 cueva estuvo sumergida. Somos afortunados de que hoy lo est茅 y poder disfrutar de un ba帽o es sus refrescantes aguas.
La temperatura de las aguas aqu铆, seg煤n los gu铆as del lugar, es bastante fr铆a, un poco m谩s de lo que estamos acostumbrados en nuestras playas y r铆os, a pesar de eso hab铆an varias personas ba帽谩ndose.
En algunos lugares la profundidad del agua alcanza los 22 metros, pero son tan transparentes que se puede apreciar el fondo sin dificultad. Sus condiciones la hacen perfecta para el buceo con snorkel.
Esta fue nuestra visita a esta maravilla de la naturaleza cubana. No nos fuimos sin darnos un chapuz贸n!! Solo mi hija y yo, mi esposo le cogi贸 miedo al agua fr铆a 馃ぃ. Saber que te est谩s ba帽ando en un lugar que pudo haber tardado cientos de miles de a帽os en formarse, tiene un significado especial y merece admiraci贸n y respeto.
