Like a flower

There are still a few hours left of Monday in this part of the planet as I write this post. I didn't want to let the day go by without sharing this project with you. It's been a while since I've told you about my sewing adventures and this one can be helpful for school projects or costume parties.

This is a flower costume that I made to order for a little 6 year old girl. It would be used in a school activity. The grandmother, who contacted me, wanted something simple and preferably in light colors.

I looked for some references and shared the final idea with the lady, who agreed. It wasn't a very complicated design, but it had some elements that were a bit laborious.

To make this project, I used some cuttings left over from previous works, always trying not to waste any material.

Aún quedan unas horas del lunes en esta parte del planeta mientras escribo este post. No quería dejar pasar el día sin compartirles este proyecto. Hace rato no les cuento mis aventuras costureras y está puede ser de ayuda para proyectos escolares o fiestas de disfraces.

Es un disfraz de flor que hice por encargo para una pequeña de 6 años. Sería utilizado en una actividad escolar. La abuela, quien contacto conmigo, quería algo sencillo y preferiblemente en colores claros.

Busque algunas referencias y le compartí la idea final a la señora, la cual estuvo de acuerdo. No era un diseño tan complicado, pero tenía algunos elementos un poco trabajosos.

Para realizar este proyecto utilicé algunos recortes que sobraron de trabajos anteriores, tratando siempre de no desperdiciar ningún material.

The list is as follows:

• 1 meter of light beich linen fabric.
• Scraps of yellow and green fabric
• Filling material
• Plastic piece for the headband
• Thread of similar colors to the fabrics
• Scissors
• Tape measure
• Sewing machine

La lista es la siguiente:

• 1 metro de tela de lino beich claro.
• Retales de tela amarilla y verde
• Material de relleno
• Pieza de plástico para la diadema
• Hilo de colores similares a las telas
• Tijeras
• Cinta métrica
• Máquina de coser

First I cut out both parts of the dress using the measurements for a size 6 (you can look them up on any sewing site). I also marked and cut out all the petals and stuffing I would use to make the flower.

Primeramente corté ambas partes del vestido utilizando las medidas para una talla 6 (se pueden buscar en cualquier sitio de costuras). También marqué y recorté todos los pétalos y el relleno que utilizaría para hacer la flor.

I decided to start with the ten petals. I straight stitched the three layers of material in the proper order and then right-side turned each one. The ones on the back in beich would be for the dress, the full yellow ones for the headband. I took the groups of five and sewed on a bias.

Decidí comenzar por los diez pétalos. Cosí con costura recta las tres capas de material en el orden adecuado y después volteé al derecho cada uno. Los de la parte trasera en beich serían para el vestido, los amarillos completos para la diadema. Tomé grupos de a cinco y los cosí a un bies.

To finish the headband, I sewed the bias binding of the yellow petals on both sides forming a sheath. Then, with a little work, I inserted the plastic and finished off the ends. Once ready, I set it aside to continue my work.

Para terminar la diadema, cosí el bies de los pétalos amarillos por ambas caras formando una vaina. A continuación y con un poco de trabajo introduje el plástico y rematé las puntas. Ya lista la aparté para continuar mi labor.

On the front piece of the dress I pinned the stem and the leaves previously cut from green fabric. I carefully sewed with thread of the same color. Then I placed a bias binding on the armholes of the front part. On the upper edge of the back I placed a thin elastic to adjust it to the back. I sewed a straight seam on both parts of the dress and finished with a zigzag to avoid fraying.

En la pieza frontal del vestido fijé con alfileres el tallo y las hojas previamente cortadas en tela verde. Con sumo cuidado cosí con hilo del mismo color. Posteriormente coloqué un bies en las sisas de la parte delantera. En el borde superior de la parte trasera coloque un elástico fino para ajustar a la espalda. Cosí con costura recta ambas partes del vestido y rematé con zigzag para evitar el dehilachado.

I attached the other set of petals to the neckline. The bias binding was used to make the straps of the piece. To finish, I hemmed the entire bottom round..and that's it!

Uní al escote el otro grupo de pétalos. El bies que tenían cosido sirvió para elaborar los tirantes de la pieza. Para finalizar relizé un dobladillo en todo el redondel inferior...y Listo!!!

I hope this simple tutorial will serve as a guide if you decide to venture into a similar project. The colors, the shape of the petals, the headband, everything can be changed according to your tastes and materials...don't limit yourself!!!
