There I was contemplating that tree with no fruit, leafless branches and dry bark. Seeing it, and even closer, a few centimeters away from me, I felt a sense of hopelessness and near end, something as if death was personified and was right in front of me to tell me that everything is over, that it is time to go to a road of no return. And it is an idea that does not seem bad after all, because I know that this farm is not what it used to be, that there have been no good harvests for quite some time, that the weather has played against me, and that the loneliness that accompanies me is my only helper, since I have no family members who can attend to these matters, and even less money to hire laborers.
I am a man of mature age, without a wife or children. My parents passed away a couple of years ago at an advanced age, leaving me in charge of all this. And even though I have not reached a stage of life where my body and mind are at their limit, I can feel the same way without being one: hunger and adversity have overtaken me. I am me in the face of this desolate world.
This tree was an example and symbol of the birth and splendor of the hacienda, since both were born at the same time. It was planted just when it was bought. Now, it has ceased to exist just like this place.
Many times I have thought of ending my existence but no, I have not wanted to do it, I do not want to cling to that thought, and now even less that there is a buyer who wants to own it. The fact is that the two of us have had conversations several times but I had not made the final decision because I thought I could get more out of the matter, which was not the case, since my conditions and skills for the business do not give me an advantage. The other guy won the deal, and got all this at a skinny chicken price.
With the little I managed to get, I can live for a good time without luxuries and comforts. At least I can buy some time until I find a way to get a job.
Now I just stare at this nut tree. I compare today with the glorious yesterday. And I think it's better to leave it all behind and leave it all to start over.
