On my last trip through Quintana Roo, I had the opportunity to make a short stop in Bacalar and visit the Fort of San Felipe.
According to Wikipedia and other websites, the Fort of San Felipe was built by order of the governor of Yucatan in 1725, to defend the city from English invasions and pirates. Construction lasted about 8 years and was completed in 1733.

En mi ultimo paseo por Quintana Roo, tuve la oportunidad de hacer una pequeña parada en Bacalar y conocer el Fuerte de San Felipe.

Según Wikipedia y otras páginas webs, el Fuerte de San Felipe fue construído por órdenes del gobernador de Yucatán en 1725, para defender la ciudad de invasiones inglesas y de piratas. La construcción duró alrededor de 8 años siendo finalizado en 1733.

Upon entering the first thing we found on the left hand side was the Jesús María tower, which was a storehouse for gunpowder and supplies of food and weapons for the troops, it also served as the commander's office. The fort was designed to be guarded on all sides by cannons, it was supposed to have several cannons but in my tour I only saw four. However its walls are thick and made of volcanic rock and limestone, I think that represented security for that time, as they were constantly attacked by English, Dutch and French pirates.

Al entrar lo primero que nos encontramos a mano izquierda es la torre Jesús María, la cual era un almacén de pólvora y de insumos de víveres y armas para la tropa, también fungía de oficina del comandante. El fuerte fue diseñado para que fueran resguardados todos sus lados por medio de cañones, se supone que debería tener varios cañones pero en mi recorrido solo vi cuatro. Sin embargo sus paredes son gruesas y hechas de roca volcánica y caliza, creo que eso representaba seguridad para ese entonces, ya que eran constantemente atacados por piratas ingleses, holandeses y franceses.

At the back of the fort is a small museum called Guerra De Castas, where pieces of piracy, weapons and objects of the founders of Bacalar are kept, there is also a small scale structure of the fort.

Al fondo del fuerte se encuentra un pequeño museo llamado Guerra De Castas, donde se guardan piezas de piratería, armas y objetos de los fundadores de Bacalar, también hay una pequeña estructura a escala del fuerte.

The fort is built next to a lagoon that is a tourist attraction of the city, in summer time the lagoon has a turquoise blue color that makes an incredible view from the fort. As I went at Christmas time, the lagoon waters were very turbulent and dirty due to the rain, so I could not observe its beautiful colors. However, I was able to enjoy a wonderful view of the lagoon and part of the city.

El Fuerte está construido al lado de una laguna que es un atractivo turístico de la ciudad, en épocas de verano la laguna tiene un color azul turquesa que hace una increíble vista desde el fuerte. Como yo fui en navidad, las aguas de la laguna estaban muy revueltas y sucias por la lluvia, así que no pude observar sus bellos colores. Sin embargo pude disfrutar de una maravillosa vista de la laguna y parte de la ciudad.
