Breath taking moments are hard to come by in a lifetime but I have been blessed with a few memorable occasions that I will always look back on with a big grin on my face. My trip over the Great Reef Barrier ranks highly among these moments. Aside from flying in a helicopter for the first time ever, the great reef barrier is a spectacular view that can be seen from a great distance in the air. I was very surprised by how clear the waters were in this area, the reef barrier finally came into view after a while of flying and it was nothing short of amazing.
The great reef barrier holds the accolade as the biggest in the entire world and its evident on observation as to why this is. The coral barrier spans for endless meters and I found this simply amazing to look at. There were a great deal of smaller islands surrounding the barrier and its known that the coral goes on for over two thousand kilometres, an immense distance. Sadly over time there have been issues of bleaching and much concern has been expressed throughout to rectify the issue. The tour guide was most helpful in helping us understand the importance of the reef and the issues it faces.
I am a great fan of marine life and after seeing this work of nature, it is nothing short of a miracle in my eyes. We were told that the reef provided a shelter for many endangered species and support the ecosystem in the area. To see such a beautiful place suffer destruction would be a tragedy.
