When night time approaches, the lights will come on. That is the case in most cities. However, on one particular night I stumbled across a most spectacular light show that took advantage of the early sunsets and attracted everyone that was walking by in the area. Berlin is an amazing city in itself but there is much more personality behind the city that one may thing. The lights festival is held on an annual basis and illuminates historical buildings using projected light imagery. The images are often works of renowned artists and completely transform the city. It is certainly captivating to anyone walking around at this time of the evening.
There is no entry fee for this show, it’s an almost city wide experience and people travel from all around the world to come visit this famous festival. The event has actually been running for a relatively short time now and started in 2005. It could be said that this may have gone viral across media as more and more people come to attend the exhibit. I believe that this is an extremely well though initiative to show off culture and drive tourism forward in the city.
If you’re travelling around Berlin around this lucky period there is a daily light show that illuminates with some very awesome pictures. It’s almost like a lick of paint being applied successively, transforming the tone of buildings is indeed sight to behold and it makes me wonder how much investment and planning went into such an event. If arriving with enough time, it may be possible to catch the grand opening of the even that is organised every year. This is when all the exhibits (buildings) will light up for the first time. This is perhaps similar to switching on the Christmas lights in your local town but perhaps a little extravagant. Next year I hope to be there for the initial lights on event, I’m sure it is a memorable experience.
There is not too much to think about when visiting the light festival. Get a map (or phone) out and plan a route to check out the awesome lights. There are a number of tours available for booking too which might give some better insight into the history of the various buildings if you are coming for the sole purpose to tour and learn. Perhaps next time I will get to take a boat tour of the city and admire the illuminated city from the very lovely waters the city holds. I absolutely love how much thought went into this event and there are even photo contests that are held every year to award the snaps of beauty that one may capture during this limited period.
