My childhood was very happy, I grew up in an Andean town called Sanare, in the south of the state of Lara, Venezuela, a place with wonderful landscapes and very friendly people.
I grew up playing native games such as rubber ball, spinning top, metras, sum sum, parrots and many more, we played football and baseball in a field full of stones, I really don't know how we survived.
There were no mobile phones, no video games and watching TV was a real problem, there were only 2 channels and you had to move an antenna from one side to the other to get a signal, but in spite of all this we were really happy.
By the time December came around, we had matchstick wars, roller skating competitions and my favourite, the rolling cart competitions - the best!
For those who don't know, these carts were designed by us and consisted of a plank of approximately 1.50 metres, with two wooden slats crossed, where 4 well oiled rollers were placed, with 3 in 1 oil, the back slat was fixed well and was the rear wheels and the front one was screwed in the centre, so that it had movement and with string or rope it acted as the steering wheel, the brakes, oh the brakes! They were our shoes, heels or at best a piece of rubber.
The competition consisted of going down a steep slope in a cart designed by you; two people, the pilot and the co-pilot, the second one was in charge of pushing you very hard, to develop more speed.
One of those days my cousin and I were competing in the CALIMOVIL, named after my dreamy face, after several tests we started the competition, my cousin, the co-driver, pushed me very hard and we went down that slope, developing an incredible speed, we topped the competition and just a few meters before reaching the finish line, a front wheel came off, the wooden bar got stuck and I flew about 3 meters high, landing on a thorn tree.
My friends picked me up and took me running to my house. When I arrived and my grandmother saw this, she took out a strap and gave me about 10 strokes, burying me in the sharp pieces of wood.
Not enough with this, my 78 year old grandfather, laid me down on the bed and with a nail clipper began to pull out thorn by thorn, in addition to spraying absolute alcohol and mentheolate, so that the wounds would not get infected, a real butcher act, I screamed from the pain, I cried, but as the days went by and I was better I was again competing in my rolling cart.
