While my older sister and I were tending to and watering the ornamental plants in front of the house, I spotted a praying mantis perched on the foliage. Judging by its appearance, it was likely an adult—its color had fully turned green—though it wasn't particularly large. I was fascinated by its form, particularly the triangular shape of its head. Unlike other grasshoppers, this insect possesses a pair of specialized front legs known as "raptorial legs"; these are folded against its thorax and feature fine spines. Although it had a somewhat menacing appearance, it posed absolutely no danger to humans. I immediately tried to capture its beauty, but the mantis kept moving and evading me by hiding behind the leaves—though, fortunately, it didn't jump or fly away.
I quite often come across green praying mantises, but it has been a long time since I last saw a brown one; perhaps their population has dwindled in my area.
