the aizu clan were loyal retainers of the Tokugawa, and were trying to defend the shogunate till the very end. even now there seem to be some tensions people in Aizu have towards people from Yamaguchi-ken or other southern provinces who supported the Meiji emperor during the Boshin war. Quite intriguing after the passing of one and a half centuries.
