I am pretty new to meditation/mindfulness practices and I have to say there are many days where it feels impossible, being a mom and a wife also, I feel you on the distractions.
Yesterday my daughter was having a meltdown for what felt like 30 minutes, when it may have only been 5. I kept coming back to my breath to calm my nerves, "I am breathing in" and "I am breathing out". Eventually it just was not working. In the midst of her tantrum she asked for a show, so I agreed and went to put the tv on, which was not working. What to do now?! Keep breathing Melissa, "In" and "Out". Once my mind was a able to think clearly I went up into our living room and tried to do puzzles with her, and well that did not work either. But then something just popped into my head. I use Insight Timer, it's an app with guided mediations as well as calming music, and I played a guided meditation called "Be Happy Morning Meditation". I turned the volume all the way up and just sat there, breathing and listening to the words of the lady who was guiding us towards a more calm demeanor. The mediation is about 10 minutes long and half way through my daughter came and sat on my lap and breathed with me. We both got our bodies calm and from then on we were able to complete puzzles and read some books.
Life's distractions can be so much for our minds to handle and I am so thankful that I am sticking with this practice and showing my daughter that, while it's okay to lose it every once in a while, this is the most healthy way to recover.
