In grade two kids get very good on counting numbers. Counting numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ...........) are also known as whole numbers. There is a need to other kind of number system after learning whole numbers which are known as fractions.
Fractions are parts of whole numbers. For example; there exist infinite numbers between 1 and 2 and we can use fractions to represent such numbers. Consider we have a pizza which is represented by the whole number "1". Now cut it into two equal slices, how much is each slice? To represent each slice we need fractions.

The total number of parts of whole is called the denominator of fraction (in our example we cut pizza into two equal slices, hence the denominator is "2"). Number of parts we need or talking is called the numerator of the fraction (In our example we are talking about one slice of pizza, hence the numerator is "1").
There are multiple ways to write fractions. We can use a drawing to represent a fraction, we write a fraction in words and we can use numerator and denominator to represent a fraction (also known as standard form of a fraction).
