A few months ago, when the hotel was still receiving tourists, I was helping my coworkers at the buffet one morning when I noticed a little boy trying to reach the table where the desserts were displayed. He seemed particularly interested in some special sweets decorated with tropical fruits. He kept looking at them, but he was too small to reach the table comfortably.

I hadn't yet figured out who his parents were, so I approached him and asked what he wanted. I tried speaking to him in English first, then in French, but he didn't answer. He just looked at me without saying a word, and for a moment I wasn't sure how to help him.

Then I tried something simpler. I pointed at the different desserts and made a few gestures, asking him which one he wanted. His face lit up when he understood what I was asking. He pointed to his favorite, and I helped him get a good portion on his plate. Happy with his choice, he went back to the table his family had chosen.

I thought that was the end of our little encounter, but a short while later I noticed him looking in my direction from time to time. When I went closer, he recognized me immediately. I pointed toward the dessert table and made a gesture to ask if he wanted some more. He nodded, and the smile that spread across his face was so wide that I couldn't help smiling too.

I brought him another portion, along with a glass of refreshing natural fruit juice. He thanked me in his own way and returned to his table, happy with his treats.

It was a small moment in the middle of a working morning. There were other things to do, and my coworkers and I had to keep the buffet running. Still, that little exchange stayed with me. We hadn't shared a single word that we both understood, yet we had managed to communicate. He knew what he wanted, I understood his gestures, and a smile helped us along.

Working in a hotel brings you into contact with people from many countries. You hear different languages, see different customs, and sometimes have to find a way to understand someone when words don't help. Adults often try to explain things, search for the right expression, or feel uncomfortable when they cannot make themselves understood. That morning, the boy didn't seem worried about any of that. He simply pointed, nodded, and smiled.

I don't know what language he spoke or whether he remembered me after that day. Perhaps, for him, I was just the woman who helped him get his favorite dessert. For me, he was a pleasant part of an otherwise ordinary workday. I still remember that wide smile when he realized I had understood what he wanted.

Sometimes, at work, we meet people for only a few minutes. We may never learn their names or see them again, but a small moment can stay with us long after the day is over. That little boy and I didn't need to speak the same language to share a simple, happy moment over a plate of sweets and a glass of juice.
