Moss plants are pioneer plants, which grow somewhere before other plants are able to grow. This occurs because of small moss plants but forms colonies that can reach large areas. Dead plant tissue is a source of nutrients for other moss plants and other plants.

Some moss plants are used as spatial ornaments. Some species of Sphagnum can be used as a skin and eye medication.
Moss grown on the floor of the rainforest helps with erosion, reduces the danger of flooding, and is able to absorb water during the dry season.
