We all know the saying, "health is wealth." Back then, even up until some years ago, all I do think about is the physical health. As long as you're doing very well physically then you're fine. But after experiencing an health issue some years back, the illness dragged for a long time. It was after I've healed from it and okay physically that I got to know that I'm still not fine. All that I've got to see and experience then has affected me mentally. That was when I realized that a person can be good on the outside and be tired, drained, exhausted and unwell on the inside.
When it happened, I felt like I was sick all over again. It wasn't easy navigating through it, because sometimes it can even be worse than a physical illness. Our mental health deserves as much attention as our physical health, meaning if a person can take a sick leave off work, then they should be able to take mental health off days too. It sounds somehow though, reason being that when we mention the word, "mental," a lot of people see it as count it as something else.
But then, there should be off days for it, so the person involved can rest, attend to themselves and be fit to continue working. Take a teacher for instance, the only thing most of us see is the hours they spend in school, but we've forgotten that they gave to prepare for each lesson, find simple ways of explaining topics to their students, read ahead, answer questions, mark assignments, record scores and all of that, it doesn't just end there, they also go home later to attend to their own family, their own lives,. struggles and all of that. In short, you can't expect such a person to not get mentally exhausted after weeks of doing that.
And the same thing can be said to business owners and people who are into other professions. Each and every profession has its own. Doctor's and nurse's have to deal with patients and patients guardians, business owners got to deal with different customers and all. And while doing all of that, they are expected to be kind, friendly, and put a smile on their faces.
I understand that a lot of people may start taking advantage of such a thing if its been made start functioning. But I don't feel the possibility of it being abused should stop it from being passed, because a lot of people in all honesty needs help, needs time out, and needs rest. This sick leave we are talking about too, are people not misusing it? Still, we leave it be. So, we can't because of some dishonest individuals deprive others of it.
A lot people we see in various workplaces today are actually not doing fine mentally, but they can't speak up, because their work environment is not safe or does not even give them a listening ear. At the end of the day you find out that they are not delivering as they used too. So, I feel workplaces too can do better, a safe and conducive environment will help people speak out instead of keeping mute and pretending everything is fine until thy start losing it. Also, the various work places can do better by creating mental health days for their workers and also holding quarterly programs on matters concerning their workers health.
When workers are doing very well physically and mentally, they tend to work better and give their best to whatever is giving to them to do. You can't expect someone who has taken time out to refresh, rest, and recover emotionally and mentally to not be more focused and productive when they resume back to work.
When we struggle mentally, every other thing pertaining to us suffers as well, so it is important that we don't just take care of our body, but also take care of our mind.
