What a nice and timely topic this is. And considering the various things happening today, it is just right that this kind of question comes up. Especially the online world and what a lot of people are doing. First off, we need to understand that there's a huge difference between holding a person accountable and seeking to destroy a person. Holding a person accountable is supposed to be done by relevant authorities, while seeking to destroy a person is what the online world is now know of.
Not as if I don't understand them too, at least I'm a social media person to some extent too and I love some of the things we do, especially when things happen and we talk about it, it is good. It is good in the sense that the media has given all of us a voice, that has helped a lot of crime to be brought to book, if not for that, a lot of terrible things happening would have never been brought to book, someone would have bribed there way out and just sweep it under the rug, but because those online won't stop talking about it and asking questions, it becomes very hard to ignore, especially when there's very good evidence backing such terrible act/case
Even still, the online community shouldn't be the one to judge or decide someone's punishment. That is just my own take. We have laws and I feel one of the reasons for having laws is so that a person can be punished according to it. If someone is being accused of doing something, then it's just best to allow the appropriate authorities take it up, investigate the matter and prove that such a person is indeed guilty. You can say it will take time and all, yeah I agree, and it most times happen because our laws now seems to be for few people while some are above it already. But what do you think or what have you seen happening with the way online people handle it too... Most times, they add to it and create a greater problem.
Another reason why I'm saying this is because the online community can be very very deep, I mean the impact is always just too loud. You can drag a person online for a thing and in just a matter of days there names will be everywhere, and this I must say as the best power to affect negatively their names, what they've been building, their business, there job, there family and a lot more, even opportunities would elude them, and even after the person faces legal consequences of their actions and are done with it, the impact of what the Internet or online community has already done would continue long after.
We just need to be careful, this Internet people often amplify a thing even beyond what it is. They add their own, push narratives and all of that just so to add fuel to the fire. Most times the full story won't be known yet, but the online community would have already decided who the guilty person is and already dealing with and canceling the person.
I'm not saying we should keep quiet on bad behaviors and terrible acts, it is good to speak up, it is good to call attention to a thing, but we should be careful about destroying a person and cancelling them, what we should do is to speak about it and call the attention of relevant authorities to it. Why destroy a person without allowing them go through die process and the law taking it course over them. Even if the person is guilty and all evidences points at him/her, allow the authorities handle it. Or why do we have laws, why do we have these various government parastatals,.
The internet has become a court room, there they dissect and and handle your case as they deem fit, and most times it is out of anger. Whereas the best thing we should have done is to speak about it, report it to relevant authorities, give evidences, and step back for them to handle it.
