Power can be very dangerous at times. And that depends on who wields it. You know, I've always admire and at the same time wonder how it feels to be able to say "No," and your no becomes an authority, how you can say "stop," and your stop becomes an authority. Even when everyone else it ought not to be, the fact that you've spoken, then you've override every other thing.
And when you talk about veto power as said by the prompt, the first thing that came to my mind was Nigeria. You would possibly want to know why right. I just feel that is the power our present president possess. And I have my reasons for saying that. As a country we have a a lot of institutions and all, some of which we refer to as independent bodies. The likes of EFCC, INEC and some more, and this institutions are supposed to carry out their duties without being controlled by politicians,. governors and even the president himself.
But in the Nigeria of today we see our present president issuing out directives, instructions, and command's to this institutions that were supposed to be independent. You know, you just here eof a matter going on and all, and in a matter of time you will just hear that the president had spoken and they've been ordered to free someone, to remove every case against him, to do this and to do that. And even if we say some of this directives can be good and all, it still makes us question if these independent bodies are truly independent or that the government can always have a day in their affairs.
And the problem also seems to lie in the system too. We've had various people occupy that seat, and we've never for once see such happening. Even if it is happening, it wasn't made known to the public, but then, the system handed over that same power to another person and this person doesn't even care. He gives directives, he gives instructions and he does all he wants even to the face of the public.
Also, I understand that maybe veto power can be good to, you know if we leave things in the hands of this independent bodies too at times they might feel too powerful too since no one is doing check and balance for them. So, having someone who can call them to order,. someone who can look at what they're doing and see that it is in the detriment of the country and it's citizens and put a stop to whatever it is they are doing or planning... That is good, even still there should be a limit.
And for me, I feel the real question is that, should a person or should a leader have unlimited and unquestionable power. Like, should a leader be able to command anything or everything at will, while no one, not even the citizens who elected the into power have the right to question them, and question their decision. Leadership already has a different meaning today. Even though when you check and read in books it will tell you how that a leader is the one serving it's people, but in the real world, in our own part of the world, it is not so. In our own part of the world it doesn't even seem like we're practicing democracy, in our own part of the world it feels like power only resides with a few, or with just one person.
