Huhm, this is a very deep and sensitive topic, at least to me, as I feel topics like this is one that will always raise various points of views with lot's of arguments. You know how religion is, especially in our own part of the country here, people will always argue it. Some will feel it is just good and best for places of worship to pay tax since they're always getting huge amounts of money from donations, tithes, offerings and all, while some would feel it is wrong for places of worship to pay tax as they as well feel this places of worship are doing a lot.
That settled, I would like to now drop my own 2cent, for me I feel places of worship should pay tax on some certain things but not on every donation and all that they get. Now here's what I'm trying to say, we know of a lot of churches and mosques that own schools, transportation companies, security companies, different businesses, hospitals and many more and I feel they should pay taxes on those things, so far they're earning from it, then they should pay their taxes like every other business/organizations.
And I would have said that they should as well tax this places of worship on the donations they get to, but I very well understand that not every place of worship gets so much, some are even using their own money to run programs, so those who get more and those who get little always have one responsibility or the other to cater for. They pay rent, they buy things, they help members in need and all of that, so taking taxes from such would only make things harder than it already is... I've seen quite a number of churches and mosques using the money they get to feed the poor, support and empower people and assist those who need to pay hospital bills, and these things cannot be ignored nor overlooked.
So, let's just separate businesses from religious activities, but if churches and mosques own certain businesses then they should be taxed for it while being exempted from paying taxes on money freely given to them. And I don't think any harm would be caused if it is done that way, but if you say churches and mosques and other places of worship should begin to pay taxes, I hope you know that the burden will at the end of that day fall on the members of such places of worship.
In conclusion, I feel places of worship and all should be more transparent in what they do and how they spend money being entrusted to them, you can't receive huge donations from the public and decide to keep mute about it acting like no one needs to know or see what or where the money is going into, and the same goes to the government who's taxing too, they should be able to account for the tax they are collecting. This is just to promote fairness, transparency, and accountability.
