There was a time when I believed that if a person has thousands and millions of followers, then they must have worked so hard to gather them and earn it. If I scroll through the Internet and see a certain video with millions of views, I would be compelled to give it a watch too, like I'd feel it is definitely worth watching.
All that changed few years ago when I followed a friend of mine to where he was learning an online skill. Towards the end of the day that day, his boss told him he will help him with something, and what is that. The boss opened one of his Tiktok accounts on my friends other phone, then opened a link too, and told him to make sure to go that link every 24hours(I'm not sure now) to input the name of the account and click on something, automatically the Tiktok accounts will gain an additional 20 followers. I was amazed then. I would have asked my friend about it then, but I'm not a tiktoker.
Aside from that, we now see how a lot of people can now buy followers, likes, and the likes. And to people like us, we feel it is true, we feel all of those followers, likes, and comments are real, because it is obvious... we can see the numbers...unknown to us they are not real people.
A lot of people says it doesn't matter, but have we checked it through another angle. Imagine a business owner or an online influencer who's honest and has spend years gathering followers, customers and building trust while another person came and in less than two months someone with fake followers who's bigger appears, you can tell that business owners would feel they should now advertise their business on this new person's page instead of the honest one that has real followers.
And a lot of content creators often turn themselves here, A has started for a while now and is still struggling to be seen and noticed, while B who just started seems to be getting all of the views and all, and A will only be discouraged and left to wonder what exactly he's not doing right, unknown to him B has just only created an illusion.
Funniest part is, a lot of people don't even care or bother. Because today once we see a thing we don't find out if it's real or not. So far it is there and we can see the numbers, then we believe it is real. And honestly, that habit is a dangerous one. Also, I don't think it should be a criminal offense. Let's say depending on what it's been used for though. Now, if someone like A later get to know that B actually buys followers, and because he's already pressured and discouraged, he decided to buy followers too so as to keep up with A and others that he feels are doing better then him, then I feel it is to some extent understandable, not as if I support buying
liked it and followers.
What I feel should be criminalized is when such an account with fake followers and likes is being used to deceive people, spread false info, and cause harm to the public. Then, we can say the person behind such an account isn't just chasing attention and wanting to be seen, rather they are doing it intentionally to harm others.
I would rather follow and leave genuine comments on an account with two hundred real followers, than engage with someone that has thousands of fake followers. I believe the Internet and our various social media platforms will be a much more better place if we spend more time focusing on people who are actually worth seeing and listening too.
