I remember how I believed for a long time that politics is for a selected few and that I'm less concerned. And some goes with voting, our votes don't count so what's the essence of voting. But after watching what has been going on in my country for a while I can't help but make my findings, sit down to think, see things the way they actually are and see every reason to let go of that old belief.
Now about making voting mandatory, I very well agree with it. I don't know for any other person, but for me, seeing the way things are in my country at the moment, then if it is force you, then we must force you. And I love that the topic added age. So why not, so far you're of age, then you should vote. I think there's a law that gives you the freedom to vote, and you can decide not to, I feel that law should be scraped off totally. Because seeing where we are in the Year 2026, why won't you vote.
Some people don't even know who's representing them in the national Assembly, some don't even know their local government chairmen and the likes, all these is because we feel we're less concerned. Whatever they like they should do, and that's what we keep having whatever people in places of power playing us the way they like and using public funds for personal ambitions and all.
It's funny how some people don't even have a voters card, most funny how some people have lost interest totally. And I can't help but wonder how you will lose interest at a time like this when you're supposed to be up and doing. Even if you don't have interest in it before, mere seeing the way things are today you should get up and demand for better. I've written countless times about the happenings in the country and about voting as well.
Most if not all what we complain and murmur about has to do with politics. We complain of bad roads, poor electricity, insecurity, high cost of living, unemployment, failed healthcare system and many more, show me how politics does not affect or have anything to do with all of these. If you feel you're not or less concerned today, by tomorrow if the government decides to return subsidy and that petrol will now be #3000 per litre and gas will be #3500 per kg, do you think because you don't vote or not involved in politics it won't affect you.
All of these things are influenced and decided by those occupying public offices. Either you like politics or not, politics is already interested in you and also involved in your everyday lives. The more you ignore it, the more worse it get.
I'm not saying making voting compulsory will take away all the problems we're facing at the moment, but it is a step towards making things better. If we are more involved and all, we can always have a louder voice to demand better, to ask that anyone who's not doing well to step down and vote in someone who has what it takes.
Also, mandating everyone who's of age to vote shouldn't mean we should force a particular candidate on them, nah. The freedom to choose who you're voting for should remain, but while voting too, we should vote our conscience and remember that we have the next four years to go again.
We can't choose to be silent at a time like this, if we want a better country, then we should be ready to be involved as well... The future of the country shouldn't be left in the hands of this corrupt and bad leaders.
