Talking about skills and certificates, for me, I don't think there's a need to choose one between both. I say that because in today's world, both need to go hand in hand.
Most of the time, our certificates open doors for us. When you apply for jobs now, you definitely need your certificate to apply or when going for an interview. It makes whoever is hiring you know that you've at least passed through some level of education and that you are learned. So, going to school, getting educated, and having a certificate is very, very good.
But you know skills as well matter; while a certificate may open doors for you, skills most times help you retain it. The fact that you studied a thing in school doesn't automatically mean that you will be considered for a job, since the job doesn't actually need your certificate; they need you to do the actual work, and their skills would definitely be considered more.
If you studied computer science and the job description says that too, but then you have no skill whatsoever, then someone who studies a different course comes in but has practical and very useful skills like data analysis, web design, UI/UX, and such skills. Don't you think that individual would be considered over you? In as much as jobs today need you to tender your certificate to show you're educated, they are more interested in you possessing practical skills.
And I can say it anywhere that in today's world, someone without a certificate can compete with someone who owns one. I understand that having no certificate can as well limit opportunities and maybe deem you unfit. And for me, that is why I feel both should go hand in hand. While getting educated, make sure to have practical knowledge too. That way you can very well stand out no matter what.
So, we need to understand the value of both, improve on ourselves, and not be so comfortable with one.
