Well, one thing I've come to notice is how that we often believe people online, I mean when we see an influencer who has massive followers and all of that, anything they put out there we tend to take and believe. We don't really check if they are qualified enough to talk on such topics. The millions of followers we see make us believe and see them as an authority.
Now, considering all that's on the social media today and how everyone is now aiming to be big and all, down don't even care how, they just do anything, much anything up and just be in the limelight. With all of that, I would say we need to be careful, the fact that such a person is popular or has a large audience doesn't automatically make them a professional in what they are talking about. There's a huge difference between being an expert and being popular. They might have a sweet mouth, know how to convince, know how to explain and even know little about what they are actually talking about, even still, it still doesn't qualify them to speak on whatever subjects it is.
Let's take medical advice for instance. As someone who has had history with health issues I can very well talk about this. That's because I often look up things online, see various opinions from people, including those who are battling with the exact same thing I'm facing. I listen to what they have to say, make more research, even with all of that, I still visit the hospital to talk to my doctor about it.
The fact that they are saying things online, and have shared a lot of helpful tips online doesn't make them a doctor or professional at whatever it is they are doing. Going to meet your doctor one on one is much better. Your physical doctor knows a lot, he's had countless experiences, he understands that the fact that you're seeing same symptoms with someone doesn't mean you both have the same problem. They ask you questions, you ask them, you talk and all of that. In short, it just cannot be compared.
And this isn't just about doctors, medicine and all of that. It cross across all aspects, talk of law and court cases, talk of financial advisors, risk of gym instructors and all of those various people you will see online talking about different things. The fact that they have that large audience and know a lot about what they are talking about doesn't make them qualified.
When you have a serious legal issue, will you go for someone dissecting everything online? When you have an injury or serious medical issue, would you go for that person who's always talking online or a physical doctor and hospital who can attend to you and know what exactly is wrong.
I'm not saying all this professionals and all are always right too, and I'm not saying this influencers are always wrong. What I'm saying is that, to judge either of the two, you need evidence, qualifications, and their experiences. We shouldn't judge just based on the number of people following them. Even though the media has made everything easy to access, make informations and all available to us, still we need to be conscious enough to know that it has also make misinformation to spread too.
This is not to say we or I won't listen to them, of course I will, there still things to learn from them while appreciating what they are contributing to the society. But then, when matters that concern my health, finance and life arise, I will definitely go to the person who's properly trained, qualified, and experienced to help handle it.
