This topic did gave me a lot of things to think about, and along the line I began to weigh my options, you know, either to choose something that will ink benefit me or go for something that can benefit us. Then an idea struck my mind, I didn't even want to write about it before, but then to be sincere that thing seems to have gone extinct in our society today.
And what is that, it is the sense of community we used to have back then. I remember while growing up we don't need to bother about a lot of things. Back then, I remember the CAC church in front of our house always have their door open, it is when we wake up early to sweep and prepare for school that we will see some travelers coming out of the church and continuing their journey to wherever it is they're going, they only crashed the night there. Today, it is not so anymore, you can't even enter a church anyhow, that is even if you meet it open.
Back then, I remember how we always care for each other, look out for each other, help one another and all of that, you don't even need to know yourself from anywhere, you just become family. There's always a way to help those struggling, there's always a way to cater for those who do not have. Aside that, we are always celebrating each other's achievements genuinely. No I'll feelings towards the other person, when there's a problem too, we would always rally round that person to help out.
Back then, my parents house a lot of people we don't even know. I can't remember how many students who had accommodation issues that my parents housed. Today, those things have gone extinct, eve if you find it, it is very rare unlike before. And that is something I would love to bring back, life was way better then, life was extra good then, life was okay then and life was safer then.
Look at the way we're living today, a lot of use even have neighbors that we don't know their name, even after spending years in the same compound or street we still don't know anything about them. Someone could be going through the hardest times of their lives and we wouldn't even know, it has even gotten to a stage that if we hear of a person's death it will take time for us to know who exactly it is they're talking about, someone who in the real sense was staying close to you, worse still that we don't even seem to care when we hear of deaths and all. That sense of community, that human feeling, that empathy, that love.... Where is it?
I understand that everyone is going through this and that, but back then too, everyone was going through this and that, they always just find a way to help each other out, that way it becomes easy. Let me cite an example of a story I hear back then, I heard that farmers back then would always pick dates to work collectively on a persons farm, the following week they would go to another person's farm and all of that, do you know how much work they would be able to do collectively.... There's just a whole lot to talk about.
That old sense of community needs to come back, technology is supposed to be of more help, but it seems we're channeling it the wrong way. Now, you don't even need to see a peron to check in on them, just grab your phone, call them or chat them up, it's been a while and I just thought to check in on you, you good? Just as simple as that. Today, we no longer share things with ourselves, you won't even see this young ones helping the elderly. All of these things are long gone.
And I'm choosing to bring back this sense of community because I believe it won't just benefit me, but would benefit a lot of people. Bringing back that sense of community will help a lot, there will be less suicidal thoughts and cases. Do you even know the amount of people living in depression, a lot. I mean...a lot. People no longer have who to rub minds with, a lot of us are living in fear, there's trust issues and many more. Now, imagine a world where you know you have people around you who are really ready to help you when you're in problem or having a difficult time. You wouldn't even think of committing suicide, you will first think about them, since you very well know that this thing you're in, they're all in with you.
Like I said earlier, life was better and safer then, yeah, but it is not to say that we should go back to the past, nah, this is just to say that there are still few good things in the past we can carry into the future. Life can become too heavy to bear and carry alone, and having people around can be very helpful and comforting.
