Greetings, friends of NEEDLEWORKMONDAY, it's a pleasure to be here sharing some of my work with you. 🪡🧵💖
Today I want to share with you how to make a men's shirt. Working with patterns, this is my first men's shirt. I've made a few before, but using another shirt as a guide, the result was good. However, I enjoyed working with patterns much more since everything is more precise. Here I show you the step-by-step instructions:

Recently, a friend of my son invited him to his wedding. For this occasion, my son asked me to make a different outfit for both him and his girlfriend. This way, they could attend the wedding in a unique style. We would already have an idea of the garments to make, so we went to the fabric store and chose a pattern called Jackelin. It's a type of fabric with a very soft texture, with a white background design and blue flowers.
His girlfriend loves the color blue, and they both really liked the fabric design. When we got home, we started deciding which style each of them would wear. I told them I would make my son's first since it's simpler than the women's. So, we decided on a shirt for him. For my son's girlfriend, it will be a dress, but I'll worry about that later. There are still a few days to go. For now, I'll share the shirt design with you.
I'm very happy to make this shirt for you because it represents something very special to me. This is the first men's shirt I'm going to make, working from patterns. I've made a few shirts before, but I've been following another garment, and I'm being honest, a lot of fabric is wasted, and the fit isn't precise. Since taking my pattern-making course, I've acquired new knowledge, and I've really enjoyed working from patterns because I feel the garments turn out exactly right. So, let's get to work. Here's the list of materials you'll need:
- To make this shirt, I estimate it will take approximately 1.5 yards. A total of 4 yards of fabric were purchased, as the dress will have a long, flared skirt. I hope that's enough.
- Scissors
- Tape measure
- Basic shirt pattern
- Sewing machine
- tijeras
- Cinta métrica
- Patrón de camisa Basico
- máquina de coser
STEP BY STEP
PASO A PASO
To begin making this shirt, I took my son's measurements. He's a little chubby but narrow-shouldered, so the pattern will be tailored to his measurements. The great thing about pattern-making is that each garment is personalized. His measurements are:
Back width 40 cm, chest 1.26 m, waist 1.40 m. With these measurements, I'll make the guide pattern. I looked in my notebook to guide me with the measurements I had already written down and made the equivalences for my son's measurements.
With the fabric folded in half, we'll place the front pattern, leaving a 3 cm allowance on the sides and hem. For the button placket, we'll leave an 8 cm allowance, or it can also be 6 cm. For the neckline, sleeve girth, and shoulders, I only added 1 cm for the seams.
Then I placed the back pattern with the fabric folded in half and cut it into 2 pieces. I made the top edge or yoke 10 cm and only added 1 cm for the seams. The yoke is cut double, and the bottom of the pattern is increased 3 cm on the sides and hemmed the same as the front.
For the next step, we'll begin assembling this shirt. We'll join the two yoke pieces at the shoulders next to the front, then join them to the lower back piece next to the yoke. I love this finish because it leaves no seams on the outside. After completing this step, we'll make the collar and sleeves.
The measurements will be: for the collar, they will be 24 cm doubled, and the sleeve circumference is 36 cm. I made my respective pattern for each one and then cut it on the fabric.
Now we are going to join the sleeves to the shirt, we make a small notch in the center of the sleeve cooo to guide us, located from the shoulder seam and sew first to one side and then to the other, so we will have the same distance for each side, this fabric that I am working has something similar to silk but it is a little easier to work with and the machine sews it very well, for this union I used my Overlook and then straight stitch.
I continued hemming the sleeves and sewing the sides together. Then I cut two strips of interfacing or perlon to glue to the front edges where the buttons and buttonholes go. Then I cut the two pieces for the neck and attached perlon to one of the pieces. The perlon I use has glue, so I glued it to the fabric with a hot iron.
As I was sewing I felt very excited because I felt that this shirt was fitting me almost perfectly, I began to join the collar and went to do the test to see how it looked on my son's body 🤭, the result seemed fascinating to me, my son loved it and now only the details of placing the buttons and making the buttonholes are missing, I am very happy with the result I obtained working with patterns, I hope to soon share with you the making of the dress, I am eager to begin it, I say goodbye for today wishing you much success and blessings 😊💖
