Watch this video I was lucky enough to get of a Great Egret eating a fish. It took him some time to get it down. Birds need to make sure to have the fish go head first down their throats. If they don't, most fish have spiked fins that will poke a hole in the birds throats, almost certainly killing them. We have Great Egrets just about anywhere around where I live. They have even been know to walk into restaurants that serve a lot of fish looking for food. They don't have a big fear of people. I know of one restaurant on Siesta Key called Old Salty Dog that has a Great Egret that comes everyday looking for a fish handout. They will eat most anything they can catch.
This bird was staring me down to see it I was going to give it something. You can see it is not very afraid of people.
Some local fisherman gave it a small fish they caught in their net for bait, lucky bird.
