This is the peak of their activity. They become adults, reach their full size, hunt the most, and at the end of summer, the mating and egg-laying season begins.
I took one picture in the yard of the place where I work on concrete. The concrete is in the shade but she was looking to get away from it and find some green surface.
And I took a picture of the second praying mantis in my yard, where there are lots of trees and greenery.
Mantises are a cosmopolitan group of insects, which means that they inhabit almost all continents of the world, with the exception of Antarctica.
The largest number of different species, as well as the largest individuals (which reach up to 16 cm), live in the rainforests of South America, Africa and Asia
A certain number of species have successfully adapted to the warmer regions of the temperate climate zone of Europe, North America and Australia
Although they were not native to this continent, the European praying mantis (Mantis religiosa) was deliberately introduced to North America in 1899 for natural pest control. Today it is widespread there.
In our region, the most common and well-known species is the common or European praying mantis (Mantis religiosa).
They are present on the territory of the entire country of Serbia. Due to warmer summers, they can be seen in large numbers both in the wild and in urban areas such as Belgrade and cities in Vojvodina.
These insects are extremely useful in nature and gardens as they function as natural pest controllers. The mantis is a fascinating, elongated predatory insect of the order Mantodea, recognizable by the specific position of its front legs, which it holds together so that it looks as if it is in prayer.
