Consider the fact that if AI is capable of putting a majority of us out of work, it would have to be so advanced as to surpass us at nearly every possible type of job. What happens with AI is that its capabilities grow explosively until hard physical limitations are met. Our brain capacity, on the other hand, can be enhanced much more slowly.
Under those conditions, there can only be UBI, Star Trek like lack of material scarcity and no need to allocate it using money - or death.
A third option is a change of value systems. In a technological civilization so advanced as to be able to eliminate material scarcity, being work-centric would seem pretty obsolete. Work means struggle to ensure our basic survival needs are met and our social standing is maintained. Why would I obsess over work in a world where all my material needs could be met with the press of a button and where the other meaning of work would be to impress some random people? The latter I've found to be utter waste of time. I'd spend my days doing what I do in my free time. I'd be engrossed in some kind of creative artistic activity or philosophical thought.
Some people might not be able to handle that kind of freedom. Maybe they could choose to live inside a simulated rat race.
