The Mysterious Sacred City - Perperikon [EN/BG] (144 photos)
We chose a beautiful day to visit Perperikon. The weather was neither too warm nor too cold. We didn't need long planning for this
trip, because Perperikon is only 20 km from the town we live in-Kardzhali.
So, let's go!
30 minutes later
30 minutes later we were at the parking lot of Perperikon. There are small shops from which you can buy something as a souvenir, as well as a map with directions if you are coming for the first time.
Older than the Pyramid of Giza
There is evidence that Perperikon has existed for about 8000 years.
Thracians, Romans, Byzantines and Proto-Bulgarians lived here.
Each civilization has left traces of its culture. Perperikon consists of an Acropolis, a Palace and an urban part and covers an area of about 12 sq. km.
It is said that in the time of the Thracians Perperikon was a sanctuary of the God Dionysus. Numerous finds support this claim.

Approximately 100 metres long,
natural rock crevice
was formed as an open corridor

Up to the top
We left the Palace and walked to the top of the hill.
Walking around, we can see dozens of niches and chutes carved into the rocks that were supposedly used for sacrifices.

Acropolis
Translation:
Acropolis
Occupies the highest part of the rock plateau.
Surrounded by a fortress wall built of large stone block.
On Perperikon 4 churches were found. This is the earliest built in the early 5th century.
The reservoir
The interesting thing about this reservoir is that although it is located at the highest part of the hill, the water level does not drop, even on the warmest days of the year.
It is probably seeping water from somewhere under the rocks.
The man with the stories
Look at this guy. In case you missed hiring a tour guide or missed buying a map with directions, this guy is your guy. He is always there and entertains tourists not only with the history of Perperikon, but also with lots of funny poems and stories. We laughed a lot and continued.
This is Fusil a million years old.
The Tower
This is the iconic 15-metre tower. There are stairs we can climb up and see the stone city from high up.
The Basilica
Translation:
Early Byzantine basilica
Three-aisled church with atrium,
rebuilt in the Middle Ages.
A large necropolis developed to the south and north.
Unique complex, these are the two words I would use to describe Perperikon.
The excavations here continue and the greatness of this complex forthcoming to be revealed.
