Mi amigo el delfín | (ESP-ING) | My friend the dolphin

Hola amigos y amigas de esta prestigiosa plataforma. Nuevamente con ustedes y con más temas de ecología. Esta vez les estaré hablando de los delfines.

Hace poco mi hijo me mandó un video que realizó cuando navegaba por las costas venezolanas. Se trata de un grupo de delfines que curiosamente acompañaban al barco y que estaban muy cercanos a la proa. Me gustó mucho este video, ya que me relajó bastante observando sus movimientos, además del azul intenso del mar. Tanto así que decidí indagar sobre ellos.

A este tipo de especies se les llama Delfines Costeros (Sotalia Guianensis), de la familia Delphinadae. Son la especie más común entre los tipos de delfines. Estos, con frecuencia, son atrapadas en las redes de flotas de pesca (aunque luego son dejadas en libertad), pero a la vez sirven de mucha ayuda a los pescadores al ir “empujando” cantidades de peces hacia sus redes. Muy inteligentes, ¿verdad?

Otros datos curiosos y que me llamaron mucho la atención son:

• Se alimentan de la leche materna durante los primeros meses de vida (son mamíferos), pero luego son estrictamente carnívoros.
• Se agrupan en manadas, por lo que son muy sociables y además, ayudan al que está herido.
• Se comunican a través de sonidos o silbidos, y algunos tienes nombre propio.
• Duermen con un ojo abierto.
• Respiran cuando saltan en el agua a través de un orificio llamado espiráculo.
• Presentan un ecolocalizador que le permiten detectar a su presa u objetos mucho mejor que la vista.
• Algunos machos utilizan una técnica muy galante en la cual “entonan versos de amor” para conquistar a la hembra.
• A sus crías se les llaman delfinatos.
• La grasa de su cuerpo contiene organohalógenos naturales.

Recently my son sent me a video he made when he was sailing along the Venezuelan coast. It is about a group of dolphins that curiously accompanied the boat and were very close to the bow. I really liked this video, since it relaxed me quite a bit by observing their movements, as well as the intense blue of the sea. So much so that I decided to investigate them.

These species are called Coastal Dolphins (Sotalia Guianensis), of the family Delphinadae. They are the most common species among dolphin types. They are often caught in the nets of fishing fleets (although they are later released), but they also serve as a great help to fishermen by "pushing" quantities of fish into their nets. Very smart, right?

Other curious facts that caught my attention are:

• They feed on breast milk during the first months of life (they are mammals), but then they are strictly carnivorous.
• They are grouped in herds, so they are very sociable and also help the one who is injured.
• They communicate through sounds or whistles, and some have their own name.
• They sleep with one eye open.
• They breathe when they jump into the water through a hole called a spiracle.
• They have an echolocator that allows them to detect their prey or objects much better than sight.
• Some males use a very gallant technique in which they "sing love verses" to conquer the female.
• Their offspring are called delifinatos.
• Their body fat contains natural organohalogens.
