· Cómo empezar: Ofrece servicio a domicilio.
· Herramientas: Canva, WhatsApp Business, y plantillas simples.
English version for Deepseek 🐳
The cost of living in Cuba is rising fast, and a single salary is no longer enough. Second-option ideas with low initial investment and high real demand, adapted to the current situation, are more than necessary. And for those who, like me, are at rock bottom in their wallets and pockets... well, I decided to make this post.
First, you have to do the math...
Most Cubans are stuck in a "crummy" state job — totally real until you realize your minimum wage only covers a bag of bread and two pounds of picadillo.
Rice 🤣
Beans 🤣
Coffee 🤣🤣🤣
That stuff no longer exists in any state-run grocery store under the regulated basic basket.
And now comes the tricky part.... How do I eat?
That's where I come in to give you options... and I'll tell you which ones worked for me and which didn't.
🔧🪛 Appliance and electronics repair
· Why it works: Prices of new equipment are prohibitive, and parts get reused.
· How to start: Offer home service. Specialize in microwaves, coffee makers, or fans — they're simpler. Learn through tutorials and practice on old devices.
Personally: It worked for me for a while until parts became too expensive.
👟🩴🎒 Shopping and shipping management for elderly or very busy people
· The service: For a commission (10-15%), you wait in lines at grocery stores and markets, manage shipments from abroad, or pick up packages at customs.
· Advantage: No investment required; your capital is your time and your clients' trust.
Personally: I've worked in sales management... commissions are almost never truly sustainable, and they almost always pay by transfer.
🥐🍞🍕🍟 Takeaway meal prep (with a focus on saving money)
· Strategy: Buy products at the farmers' market (cheaper than at stores) and prepare filling dishes (picadillo, beans, soups).
· Differentiation: Offer weekly menus to working neighbors. Example: 5 lunches for 800-1000 CUP. The key is volume.
Personally: I'm working with my family on this approach. We plan to teach them the process soon. Even so... it's not very sustainable in a rural setting.
📲📱🖥💻📟 Digital services for local businesses (from your mobile phone)
· What to offer: Create QR menus for private restaurants (paladares), manage social media for self-employed workers, design basic business cards.
· Tools: Canva, WhatsApp Business, and simple templates. Payment is in foreign currency.
Personally: Highly sustainable, but you need good IT infrastructure.
💡 Practical tips:
· Avoid regulated assets: Don't get into private transport, fuel, or state-controlled products without a clear license.
· Use bartering: Exchange your services (e.g., fixing an iron) for food or favors that reduce your fixed costs.
· Dual-currency pricing: Charge part in foreign currency if the service allows it, and part in CUP for local expenses.
The most important thing is that your second option should not depend on expensive infrastructure (fixed internet, imports) and should solve an immediate need: saving money or generating quick income. Start with just one service and scale it by testing it in your building or neighborhood.
I hope this was useful and that it's a more realistic guide than what you'll find on Google or what an AI would produce.
