On a cliff overlooking the Pacific, nestled between cypresses, an architectural gem signed Lewis Butler and Reba Jones becomes a family vacation home.
For the architects, the renovation of the house, designed in 1974 by Ralph Matheson and renovated in 1990 by William Turnbull Jr., proved easier than expected. With its lush and relaxing nature, the site itself has played the role of mediator. Resisting the temptation to provide extended views in all the spaces of the house, the architects placed the windows carefully. The views from the bedroom and the family room are left by smaller openings, the right size for a moment of introspection. Between the library and the master suite, a blind door provides just enough separation to be forgotten. And if these spaces are tailored to the specific wishes of the clients, it is in the two office spaces that the details of the design best reflect the personality of the couple. Works of art throughout the house capture the eye but release it quickly. The Douglas fir whitewashed vertical planks that wrap around the interior remind us of the cedar covering the outside of the house.
