A science teacher prepared some eighth grade students for a laboratory exercise with lighters, when they asked: "What exactly is the fire?". The teacher wanted the students to understand that fire occurs when the correct substances are present and the temperature reaches a certain point. But he realized that the technical part of the answer (fire being a rapid chemical reaction called combustion) would be incomprehensible to the student. For that reason, he answered saying, "For now, it might be better to ask what is happening on the chemical plane before, during and after we see or feel the fire." While the students activated their lighters, and the flames changed from yellow to blue, it was important that they understood that the original substances would change while the flame continued to burn, and that they would literally end up transforming into a different substance. This reality about fire can also be applied to our concept of God. Hebrews 12:29 states that "our God is a consuming fire." In the same way, when we, who are of a particular substance, have approached the God who is a consuming fire, we will be changed and made into something new. In addition to this, fire requires oxygen and some type of fuel to burn. John the Baptist taught that "... he shall baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire. Your fan is in your hand, and it will cleanse your era; and he will gather his wheat in the barn, and he will burn the chaff in a fire that will never be quenched "(Matthew 3:11, 12). The baptism of the Holy Spirit that Jesus brought will have to burn in such a way that it will reach the depths of our souls and consume our errors, prejudices and selfishness, like straw in the depths of our souls.
Likewise, the fire of the Spirit of God works to purify every believer who does not resist or flee from its intense heat. The fire of God consumes the impurities that have accumulated in the recesses of the soul. The fire of the Spirit melts all hardness of heart, and causes the believer, like metal, to become flexible, malleable and easily poured into the molds of God's will and purpose. The consuming fire of God will not be extinguished until the reflection of God the Father can be seen in the life of the purified believer. Certainly, the Holy Spirit, like the fire of God, is a primary agent that produces holiness in the children of God
Walking in the Spirit does not bring condemnation, the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus frees us from the law of sin and death, the one who thinks about the things of the Spirit (the believer) enjoys life and peace, life comes from Spirit of God that dwells in us, those who are led by the Spirit are children of God.
Without the help of the Spirit, we would only achieve holiness without its main quality: the love of God. "For all who are led by the Spirit of God, these are the children of God" (Romans 8:14). Holiness implies a lasting relationship with our holy God, which develops as the Christian is guided by the Spirit. Our walk in the Spirit develops intimacy with the God of holiness. As in any other relationship, the longer the believer passes with God, the more he will begin to look like Him. This maxim is true: we become that which we worship. May the saints everywhere adore God fervently in the fullness of the Holy Spirit! As we worship and walk in the Spirit, we will see that God's holiness manifests itself more and more throughout our lives.
