The shortage of truckers increased from 61500 to 80000 from before the COVID-19 pandemic till now, according to this article. Truckers are a key link in the supply chain. They haul 72.5% of all freight in the United States and represent 6% of the fully employed workers of the country.

The reasons for this worsening shortage are multiple. Age demographics (retiring truckers) , the COVID-19 pandemic (vaccination requirements), drug testing (many people consuming cannabis), and age restrictions (commercial drivers must be 21).
