The destruction of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 (NS1 and NS2) pipelines which occurred on September 26, 2022 has altered the energy map of Europe. These were major pipelines which transported cheap Russian gas directly to Germany. NS1 has been operational for several years and NS2 did not start transporting gas yet.

Europe's development and manufacturing base (and its relative wealth) has been constructed on the foundation of cheap energy sources. NS1 and NS2 assured the continuation of them and an integration, from the energetic perspective, between Europe and the rest of the Eurasian landmass.

Now, Europe is forced to buy more expensive LNG from the United States and the Middle East to cover for the losses. This will affect its competitiveness and the quality of life of its citizens.
