Concept: December 20, 2021. Energy Requirements for a Hydrogen Economy

What are the energy requirements for a hydrogen economy? The first concept that needs to be understood is that hydrogen by itself is an energy carrier. It carries the energy input needed to create the hydrogen gas. For example, electrical energy is needed to be applied to water so that the water molecule can break its bonds and hydrogen gas generated. Once this hydrogen gas is collected it will carry the energy input.

Energy is also required to compress the hydrogen gas, to liquefy it, to transport it and to store it. The transport of hydrogen is specially important. If the economy will switch to a hydrogen economy, it will need a completely new system of pipelines since the current ones used for hydrocarbons would not be suitable.

A hydrogen economy would only make sense if in the end the costs are lower than the ones of hydrocarbons.
