I lived in Mataram for a while and I agree with you when it comes to the tourist spots. However, in Mataram you can get the best, cheapest and most authentic Lombok food (apart from the malls 😄) so if you love Indonesian food, there is probably no better spot than Mataram and Ampenan. The tourist areas can't compare with that. 😉
