How well do you know the most common birds living in the Eastern USA and the East of Canada?
Read through the text below and pick the correct bird. The included photo may give you a good clue as well.
Markings : Black head, breast and upper parts; rufous sides, white belly; large white patches in tail; close up - red eye, white in southeast; female - similar, but black portions replaced by brown.
Habitat : Open woods and edges; thick undergrowth; brush fields, thickets, hedgerows; yards and parks with shrubs.
Seasons : All year, except over much of North, where it is seen in spring, summer and fall.
Range : Breeds from s. Canada to Florida and Gulf of Mexico, but not in Texas. Winters north to s. Great Lakes and s. New England.
Note : This finch is sometimes called "Ground Robin". Towhees scratch vigorously amongst dead leaves and visit bird feeders.
