According to research, Muş was first used by the Urartian kingdom in the 13th century BC as a city. But in later years Muş changed hands among many kingdoms. After the kingdom of Urartu, Muş was conquered by the Scythian and Median kingdoms.
In later years, Muş was conquered by the Persian Empire. After the Persians were defeated by Alexander the Great, they left Muş. Later, Muş became a city of the Roman Empire. And Muş was ruled by the Roman and Byzantine empires for many years.
In 1071 Muş was conquered by the Seljuk state. In later years, Muş changed hands among many Turkish states. Muş was finally conquered by the Ottoman Empire in 1514. After dapıl of the Ottoman Empire, Muş has been a city of the Republic of Turkey.
