According to researches, the communities first started to live in Mersin in the Neolithic age. Many artifacts have been found in the community living in Mersin during the Copper Age. Mersin was used as a city for the first time by the Kingdom of Hurri.
After the Hurri kingdom, Mersin was ruled by Luvi and Arzava kingdoms. In later years, Mersin was conquered by the Hittite kingdom. But Mersin is a very important city. Therefore, many states tried to conquer Mersin. The conquering states of Mersin are Assyrian, Persian, Greek, Macedonian, Roman, Arab, Byzantine and Turkish states respectively.
In 1517, Mersin was conquered by the Ottoman Empire was conquered. And after the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire, Mersin has been a city of the Republic of Turkey.
