The first life in Igdir started around 5000 BC. In Igdir, the Hurrians first began to live. But because of the abundance of the Igdir plain, many states wanted to conquer Igdir. Iğdır was conquered by Mittani's, Hittites, Assyrians, Kimmer's, Med's, Persians, Sumerians and Subai's respectively.
In 900 BC, the Urartians conquered Igdir. And Urartians made a castle in Igdır. But the other states continued attacks on Igdir. Arsak's conquered Igdir. But the Urartians took Igdir back. And in 224, Igdir changed hands between these two nations.
In 226, Igdir was conquered by the Sasanian state. Until 645, Iğdır was controlled by the Iranians. But then the Byzantine empire conquered Igdir. But only two years later, the Arabs conquered Igdir.
Igdır was conquered by Seljucks in 1071. And the Turks who came from Kayı around Igdir settled down. But because of the Mongol attacks that began in 1239, Kayi's leave Igdir.
In 1502, Igdir was conquered by the Safavid government. But immediately afterwards, the Ottoman Empire conquered Igdir. And Igdir changed hands between these two states until 1747.
In 1747, the Revan Khanate began to control Igdir. And Igdir began to enrich in this period. And Igdir was a powerful and rich city. But in 1828, Igdir was started to be ruled by the Russians.
In 1917, the Armenians and the Turks agreed to rule of Iğdır together. But later the Armenians resigned this committee. And the Armenian militia began attacking Igdir. The militia established by the Turks fought against the Armenian militia. And the Turkish militia has defeated the Armenian militia. With the agreement made in 1920, Iğdır, came under the management of the Republic of Turkey. And Igdir, has always been an important city in Turkey.
