According to research, the communities first started to live in Erzurum in 4000 BC. Erzurum was first used by the Urartian kingdom as a city.
But because of the beautiful geographical conditions, many states tried to conquer Erzurum. The conquering states of Erzurum are Cimmerians, Scythians, Hittites, Medes, Persians, Romans and Byzantines. While Erzurum was ruled by the Byzantine Develti, the Arabs, Iranians and Turks tried to conquer Erzurum many times. And Erzurum has changed hands many times between these three states.
In the 15th century, Erzurum was conquered by the Ottoman Empire. After the breakup of the Ottoman Empire, Erzurum has been a city of the Republic of Turkey
