Egbert was born in 771. Egbert was sent to exile by the 10-year-old Mercia king Offa. After these years Egbert has made preparations to become King. In 802 Wessex king Beorhtric died. Egbert, who wanted to help in this situation, declared himself king of Wessex.
Soon all the Wessex people supported Egbert's empire. One of the reasons is that Egbert is a Christian. At the same time Egbert emphasized agriculture. And Egbert gave land to the people of Wessex for farming.
Egbert finally launched a war against the kingdom of Mercia. And Egbert has won this war. After this war Egbert conquered the entire Mercia. But then the people of Mercia started a rebellion against Egbert. Egbert could not finish this rebellion. As a result, the Wessex army left the Mercia soil.
Egbert lost his life in 839.
