The first life traces in Çanakkale belong to the Copper Age in 6000 BC. But at that time there is no information about the communities living in Çanakkale. According to the evidence found, Çanakkale was first used as a city in 4800 BC.

In the 11th century, attacks were carried out by Turkish raiders to Çanakkale. And it was conquered by Canakkale, Karesi. In 1361, after the disintegration of the Karesi rule, Çanakkale was captured by the Ottoman empire. Çanakkale was in a very important position for the Ottoman Empire. Particularly those who wanted to pass by sea to the Sea of Marmara had to use only the Dardanelles throat. And the Dardanelles throat was the intersection of the Marmara Sea and the Aegean Sea. Therefore, the Ottoman state made the castles on both sides of the Dardanelles Bosphorus.
In the First World War, the entente states that wanted to conquer Istanbul tried to cross the Dardanelles. But thanks to the great courage of the Turks, the trials of both the naval and land warfare of Entente powers have failed. Unfortunately, around 400,000 people died during the war in Çanakkale.
