According to research, the Hittite kingdom first used Adıyaman as a city. But many states have tried to conquer Adıyaman. Therefore Adiyaman has been conquered many times by different states.
After the Hittite state, the king of Hurri conquered Adıyaman. But after that, Adiyaman was conquered by Mitanni, Kummuh, Assyria and the Persian Empire. After the defeat of the Persians to Alexander the Great, Adıyaman was ruled by the Seleucid state. But soon after, the kingdom of Kommagene conquered Adıyaman.
Later, Adiyaman was conquered by the Romans. But after 670, Adıyaman was conquered by the Arabs. But in 926 the Byzantines took back Adiyaman.
In 1066, Adiyaman was conquered by the Turks. But after this date by the Arabs, Turks and Iranians, Adiyaman changed hands several times. In 1515, Adıyaman was conquered by the Omsnalı Empire. And after the disintegration of the Ottoman Empire, Adiyaman was been a city the republic of Turkey.
