On February 8, the International Women's Day was celebrated, a date that seeks to make visible the struggle of women for equality, participation and empowerment of the so-called "weaker sex" in all areas of society.
Although the origin of this commemoration dates back to the beginning of the last century, it was not until 1975 that the United Nations officially promulgated it.
In this sense, I wanted to pay a small tribute to women, choosing a trio of songs belonging to different musical genres interpreted by three artists who over time, became references of universal music.
Now, without further ado, I invite you to relax and enjoy the musical selection that I share today on this platform.
El pasado 8 de Febrero, se celebró el Día Internacional de la Mujer, una fecha que busca visibilizar la lucha de las féminas por la igualdad, la participación y el empoderamiento del llamado "sexo débil" en todos los ámbitos de la sociedad.
Aunque el origen de esta conmemoración se remonta hasta principios del pasado siglo, no fue sinó hasta el año 1975 que las Naciones Unidas la promulgó de forma oficial.
En este sentido, he querido rendir un pequeño tributo a la mujer, escogiendo un trío de temas pertenecientes a diferentes géneros musicales interpretados por tres artistas que con el transcurso del tiempo, se convirtieron en referentes de la música universal.
Ahora, sin mayores preámbulos, los invito a relajarse y disfrutar de la selección musical que hoy comparto por esta plataforma.
Ella Jane Fitzgerald was an American jazz singer, also known as Lady Ella, the Queen of Jazz and the First Lady of Song, born in 1917 and who died in 1996.
She is considered, along with Billie Holiday and Sarah Vaughan, as one of the most important and influential vocalists in the entire history of jazz and, in general, of the popular songbook of the 20th century in the United States.
Her repertoire was very broad, and included, in addition to jazz, also swing, blues, bossa nova, samba, gospel and pop, among other genres.
On the other hand, Cheek to Cheek is a song composed and written by the American composer and lyricist of Russian origin, Irving Berlin, in 1935 for the movie Top Hat, starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers, and that Fitzgerald included in his album Ella and Louis that he recorded together with another sacred monster of jazz such as Louis Armstrong.
Ella Jane Fitzgerald fue una cantante estadounidense de jazz, conocida también bajo los apodos de Lady Ella, la Reina del Jazz y la Primera Dama de la Canción, nacida en 1917 y que falleció en 1996.
Está considerada junto a Billie Holiday y Sarah Vaughan, como una de las vocalistas más importante e influyente de toda la historia del jazz y, en general, del cancionero popular del Siglo XX de los Estados Unidos.
Su repertorio era muy amplio, e incluía, además del jazz, también swing, blues, bossa nova, samba, góspel y pop, entre otros géneros.
Por otra parte, Cheek to Cheek es un tema compuesto y escrito por el compositor y letrista estadounidense de origen ruso, Irving Berlin, en el año 1935 para la película Top Hat, protagonizada por Fred Astaire y Ginger Rogers, y que Fitzgerald incluyó en su álbum Ella and Louis que grabó junto a otro monstruo sagrado del jazz como lo era Louis Armstrong.
Nina Simone, born in 1933 as Eunice Kathleen Waymon, was an American singer, songwriter and pianist of jazz, blues, R&B and soul, known by the nickname of High Priestess of Soul.
An activist for the Civil Rights of people of African descent, Simone left the United States in 1969, after the assassination of the leader Martin Luther King, to settle in France where she died in 2003.
Possessing a very passionate personality, Simone was an arrogant and aloof person, however, in her last decades of life, she reached a rapprochement with her audience, telling anecdotes and fulfilling requests.
Feeling Good is a song composed by the British Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse for the 1965 musical, entitled "The Roar of the Greasepaint - The Smell of the Crowd", which Simone included on her album I Put A Spell On You.

*Piece of my Heart" is a song originally recorded in 1967 by Erma Franklin, sister of the immortal "Queen of Soul", Aretha Franklin.
The song became a real hit on the charts around the world, when the following year, the Big Brother and the Holding Company with their vocalist Janis Joplin at the front, performed a version that was included in the band's second album entitled Cheap Thrills, reaching the number 12 position in the U.S. singles chart.
In 2004, the prestigious magazine Rolling Stone, places it in position 334 in its list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".
As for Janis Joplin, prominent lifetime member of the fateful "27 Club", I think there is little that can be added about this extraordinary rock'n roll and blues vocalist that has not been said or written before.

El tema se convertió en un verdadero éxito en las carteleras discográficas del mundo, cuando al siguiente año, la Big Brother and the Holding Company con su vocalista Janis Joplin al frente, realizan una versión que fue incluida en el segundo álbum de la banda titulado Cheap Thrills, alcanzando la posición número 12 en la lista de sencillos de los Estados Unidos.

This is my selection of the week. Somehow, I wanted to pay a small tribute to women, in a new commemoration of their day, by choosing a trio of artists who stood out on the scene with the best musical instrument humanity has ever known: the voice.

Esta es mi selección de la semana. De alguna manera, quise rendir un pequeño tributo a la mujer, en una nueva conmemoración de su día, escogiendo un trío de artistas que destacaron en la escena con el mejor instrumento musical que ha conocido la humanidad: la voz.
